Hello, little story-seeker! It’s Kiki again. Ready to discover how Ireland got her name?
The Age of Mist had become the Age of Magic. For many years, the Tuatha Dé Danann ruled the land. Then the Milesians sailed from Spain, seeking justice for their kinsman Íth, who had been killed in Ireland.
With them came Amergin, a poet and judge. On their journey towards Tara, he met Banba at Sliabh Mis, then Fódla, and Ériu at Uisneach. Each queen asked that her name remain upon the land. Amergin promised that Ériu would be its principal name. Banba and Fódla would also live on as poetic names for Ireland.
At Tara, the Milesians demanded the right to rule Ireland. Mac Cuill, Mac Cecht and Mac Gréine asked Amergin to decide what would be fair. Amergin decided the Milesians must sail beyond nine waves, giving the kings time to defend Ireland. Then they could try to land again and fight for the right to rule. The Milesians agreed and sailed back out to sea. But the kings believed their magic could keep them away. Their druids raised a magical wind to stop the Milesians coming back. Amergin called to the land, and the wind grew calm.
The Milesians returned and prevailed in a final battle. After their defeat, the Tuatha Dé Danann retreated into magical dwellings beneath the hills, called the sídhe. The Milesians ruled above, but the magic lived on. From Ériu came the name Éire. At Tara, a magical treasure of the Tuatha Dé Danann remained: Lia Fáil, the Stone of Destiny. Legend said it would cry out for a rightful king. Ready to discover the secrets of Tara?
